Food and Beverage

Headworks has experience delivering economic wastewater treatment solutions for Prepared Foods, Beverage, Dairy, Meat, and Poultry applications throughout the world.

Wastewater generated from food and beverage processing operations has distinctive characteristics that differentiate it from that of other industries. Typically, these process wastewaters have high concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), and associated odors. Typically, the wastewater is discharged to a publicly owned treatment works (POTW) with either pretreatment or no treatment. A surcharge is levied by the POTW based on the flow as well as the concentrations of BOD, TSS, and nitrogen over the sewage strength.

Wastewater in the food and beverage industry is high-strength but extremely biodegradable and typically non-toxic – making it the ideal feed water for Headworks Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (ActiveCell™ MBBR/IFAS) treatment systems or Headworks Anaerobic Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor EnergyCell depending on the strength of the effluent.

MBBR biofilm carrier technology achieves high-rate biodegradation of organic matter within a compact, economically operated system. ActiveCell biofilm carriers establish a high-density population of bacteria within the process; these bacteria naturally oxidize organic wastewater constituents, reliably biodegrading target constituents from process wastewater streams prior to discharge.
